Artist Statement & Resume

After working for 30 years in the arts as a designer, teacher and administrator, I have returned to the business of painting. The majority of my work is oil on canvas or panel. I work with a combination of knife and brush, focusing on personal imagery: people I know and places I have visited.
Recently, I have launched a new body of work, Nostalgia Series, inspired by the photos of Dr. Lester Reiss. His son, David Reiss, created the film, HOPE: Then & Now, which is based on my career as an artist and our shared admiration for his father. Lester was a brilliant philosophy professor with a talent for elegant black and white photography. Influenced by these nostalgic images, I am using a limited palette to represent the photos of the 1960’s and 70’s era. Underpainting in a contrasting color gives a luminous energy to the surface. The body of work includes family members, abstractions of nature and architecture, and landscapes of Connecticut College, where Lester lived and worked. Also inspired by Lester's images, Oil on Plaster Abstracts are oil paintings on plaster, carved and built-up with sculptural texture, then painted with oils.
Family Series is a body of work inspired by very old photographs of people. These are commissioned works that morph personal images, often worn from age, into oil paintings.
I work in my studio at Joy Street, Somerville, a space shared with painter, Lynda Michaud Cutrell.
